    Is it possible to place the featured image to the left of the excerpt on a category page for desktop, instead of above it, and have it automatically resized to a uniform size, like on the homepage?

    Yes, it can be done. Please navigate to Dashboard > Appearance > Customise > General Layouts > Page Layouts > Other Pages and select a layout with List Style. Here is the screenshot for reference: https://prnt.sc/5-4Sq_wD1Brz
